St. Stephen UMC Outreach Ministries
Apportionments are St. Stephen's "fair share" support for the worldwide ministries of The United Methodist Church. We think of these contributions as "a portion meant" for missions. Currently, our "Bean Pot" offerings received on Communion Sundays are designated as "second-mile" contributions toward our apportionments.
St. Stephen UMC has partnered with local food programs to distribute groceries to food-insecure families in our area. Registration is required. Distribution occurs at the Church on the third Thursday of each month from 1 to 6 p.m. Volunteers are always needed. For details contact Barbara Caton.
EMERGENCY FOOD PANTRY
St. Stephen also provides an emergency food pantry for one-time donations in times of acute need. If you know someone in distress from hunger or food insecurity, please refer them to the church office.
The following non-perishable groceries are distributed regularly through the St. Stephen Emergency Food Pantry. Please contribute only varieties with long shelf-life.
Spaghetti Spaghetti Sauce
Canned Fruit Canned Chicken & Tuna
Canned Vegetables Soup
Peanut Butter Macaroni & Cheese
Hamburger and Tuna Helpers
AUSTIN STREET HOMELESS SHELTER BREAKFAST
Once a quarter, a crew from St. Stephen serves breakfast to the homeless staying at the Austin Street Shelter in Dallas. If you can't serve on the crew, which gets going at 4:30 a.m. on a Sunday, we welcome donations of canned fruit, individually wrapped muffins and funds to purchase other items. Contact Paula Humphreys for details, or sign up on the roster in the foyer.
EWING HOUSE SUPPER PROGRAM
On the fourth Tuesday of each month, St. Stephen serves a Mexican-style dinner to the residents of Ewing House, a division of AIDS Services of Dallas that provides housing and healthcare for people living with AIDS. Contact Tina Simpson for details, or sign up on the roster in the foyer.
We reorganized the "helping hands" group and renamed it "The Bucket Brigade." This group works with Habitat for Humanity projects, Addressing Mesquite clean-up events, North Texas Conference Amigo Days and other community repair projects around Mesquite.
Ongoing Programs St. Stephen UMC Supports
Love Thy Baby: Formerly Newborns in Need, Inc., Love Thy Baby is a nonprofit organization that donates blankets, baby clothes and other essential items to organizations that provide for premature and newborn infants. St. Stephen members sew, quilt, knit or crochet clothing, blankets and more. We also collect gently used baby clothing, donate fabric and sewing supplies and make financial donations. Work Meetings are 1st Saturday of each month (except when holidays conflict) at Webb Chapel Church of Christ. For more details contact Gina Hedgecock or Liz Dickson.
If you have an Outreach project you would like to suggest please contact the Church Office and your idea will be forwarded to the Outreach Committee. Also contact the Church Office for more information on current Outreach Projects and Volunteer Opportunities.
